Worried about what to wear when your bump starts to show? A capsule wardrobe will help.
Pregnancy comes with so many changes, including a change in your body. If it’s your first pregnancy you may get away with wearing your existing clothes for the first trimester. And it is only from the second trimester when the baby bump becomes more noticeable that you will need maternity wear. For subsequent pregnancies, many people tend to ‘pop’ sooner and need clothes that can accommodate their bump as early as trimester 1.
Regardless of whether this is your first or subsequent, this pregnancy capsule wardrobe is here to save you time and money!
What exactly is a maternity capsule wardrobe?
You’ve probably already heard about people building capsule wardrobes for work or travel. It involves intentionally choosing a key few clothin pieces that you can mix and match to create multiple outfits that look good on you!
It’s a great way to save time. It helps you save money. It also means you look good every single day!
The same concept can be applied to maternity clothes. A maternity wardrobe allows you create a minimalist wardrobe of few ‘bump-friendly’ clothes that can be mixed and matched to created many outfits during your pregnancy and post-partum.
It’s all about being intentional and having one less thing to worry about during and after your pregnancy.
How to create a Maternity Capsule Wardrobe
Shop your closet first: Before buying new clothes, see what you already have that can work with a growing bump. Flowy dresses, oversized shirts, long tunics, stretchy tops, and leggings are all maternity-friendly.
Focus on neutrals and classics: Opt for timeless pieces in neutral colors like black, white, navy, and khaki. These will mix and match easily and won’t go out of style. You can always add pops of color with accessories.
Think “mix and match”: Choose pieces that can be easily dressed up or down. A comfy jersey dress can be worn with sneakers for errands or sandals for a night out.
Consider the season: Plan your wardrobe around the trimester you’ll be in for most of your pregnancy. If it’s a summer pregnancy, lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen will be your friend.
Don’t forget layering: A denim jacket, cardigan, or kimono can add versatility to your outfits and keep you comfortable in changing temperatures.

BOTTOMS for your maternity capsule
Maternity Jeans
Jeans are a must-have for most maternity wardrobes. Having 2 pairs is a good place to start. Look for jeans with a soft, stretchy material. Whether you choose a jeans with a maternity over the bump panel or under bump panel is down to personal preference. I personally tried both types but preferred the over the bump jeans.
Jeans can be dressed up or down, making them perfect for errands, work (depending on dress code), or casual outings.
Black Pants
Black pants offer a polished look for work or dressier occasions. They can also be dressed down with a t-shirt and sneakers for a more casual vibe. Black is known to be slimming, which can be a confidence booster during pregnancy.
Maternity leggings or Joggers
These are your go-to for ultimate comfort and relaxation. Perfect for lounging at home, running errands, or light exercise (depending on the style).
TOPS for your maternity capsule
Tees
Maternity tees are a staple for a relaxed and comfortable feel. Look for soft, stretchy fabrics like cotton jersey that will drape nicely over your bump. Tees can be worn alone for a casual look or layered under a cardigan or jacket for added warmth.
Tank tops
Tank tops are great for layering under a cardigan, kimono, or jacket to create different outfits. You can choose from basic tanks to more flowy tanks if you like more feminine styles.
Blouses
From classic button-down shirts to feminine blouses with ruffles or peplums, you can add a number of blouses to your capsule wardrobe. These can be used for work or for more dressier occasions.
‘One and done’ maternity capsule pieces
“One-and-done” pieces like wrap dresses (flattering, adjustable, dress up or down), midi dresses (comfy, stylish, relaxed fit with tie or empire waist), and jumpsuits (easy throw-on, dress up or down in soft, stretchy fabric with tie or empire waist) are perfect for every maternity capsule wardrobe. They are comfortable and make dressing up a breeze.
OUTERWEAR
Sweatshirts
Sweatshirts are a must-have for lounging or running errands. Look for styles with a relaxed fit that will accommodate your growing belly. You can also include 2 sweaters with discreet nursing access for easy breastfeeding once your baby arrives.
Cardigans
A long cardigan is a great layering piece that can be worn over dresses, tanks, or tees. Choose a neutral color like black, gray, or camel so you can easily mix and match it with other pieces in your wardrobe.
Jacket
Many non-maternity jackets can work during pregnancy with a little creativity. Look for oversized styles or try layering a shorter jacket over a longer top.
OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER
Pregnancy Bras
Invest in comfortable and supportive maternity bras that will grow with you throughout your pregnancy. Look for soft breathable fabrics, and easy clip-down closures for nursing access after birth.
Bump Support
I think Belly bands or support belts are really essential especially if you suffer from back pain or discomfort. It can help alleviate back pain and support your bump, especially as your pregnancy progresses.
Pregnancy U-shaped Pillow
This unique pillow provides full-body support for a better night’s sleep. The U-shape cradles your bump, back, hips, and legs, helping to ease aches and pains and promote proper alignment.
